INANIMATE - CENSORED PICTURES12 PICTURES OUT OF THE 26 ONES EXHIBITED IN THE "IN-ANIMATE" EXHIBITION IN BRUSSELS HAVE BEEN CENSORED DURING THE THREE AND A HALF MONTH EXHIBITION (to get to the exhibition- click here)Please make up your mind about censorship by scrolling down to the 12 pictures that were censored during the three and a half months of the IN-ANIMATE exhibition. Out of 26 pictures that were shown there, these ones were found to be provocative, shocking and offensive. There were quite some complaints by people and institutions who were about to rent the facilities for their events. Consequently the responsible staff of the exhibition venue decided to take these pictures down and put them away so that the public could not see them any longer. The critics seemed to say that they did not like the pictures because they would be offensive and remind them of children. Towards the end of the exhibition also pictures of people got censured which is mystifying me. All of the pictures that got censured are of course taken out of context. I have an understanding for the fact that without the appropriate knowledge, one would not immediately see that these pictures are not posed but show reality. Dolls can get broken, arms can lie next to a doll’s head if worst comes to worst for a doll. Skin is sometimes not perfect and even if it is it can be the fly swatter is worn out. It is entertaining that censorship is still possible in the year 2006 but on the other hand it is also frightening. After all the reactions I’ve got I think what happened is a good sign. My pictures have been discussed, they provoked resistance, people were against them. I agree that after close investigation there cannot always be agreement. Resistance and rejection means also that my pictures have alarmed and excited people – and I thing drawing the conclusion that my pictures are exciting is more than ok with me.
