Blog 2017

I am going through a rather clumsy phase. A few examples: During the past few days I cut my right thumb with a knife. A day later I spread a cup of boiling tea partly over my hand, partly over the couch. Then I pinched hole in my left palm instead of removing the stone of an avocado, spread marmalade all over the kitchen floor, sunk a golden ring in the bathroom sink and kicked off a huge picture from the gym’s wall.

Discovered a nice new coffee shop called Zeitschmiede, which translates to time smith.

A long-cherished dream has been put into practice. I traveled to Lviv, the capital of Galicia, now known as Lviv. What an interesting, beautiful city full of surprises! I felt as if I had been there before, many things seemed so familiar to me. As if I had a distant aunt there, who has invited me over and over again and told me story after story about the town. Perhaps it was only the books by Joseph Roth who had made such an impression but be that as it may, it would definitely be nice to have an aunt there!

I was attending a book presentation on a rather complex matter. It was odd to hear a man in his late 50ies (in the audience) say about a man in his late 40ies (the presenter) in a rather dismissive way that ‘something will still become of him!’, completely overhearing the comment that ‘it rather looks like something has already become of him’.

It is not necessarily so that people who know exactly what they want are undoubtedly the most charming ones. Often enough it seems to be just to the contrary.

You can actually buy ready made ruins online. Unfortunately they come disassembled and so you have to still build them up which is sort of a contradiction come to think of it. The stones weigh 3 tons and are delivered to your doorstep.

Wuerzburg is always worth your while even just for a few hours!

Saw the West Side Story for the first time and absolutely loved it! It has been a wonderful evening.

‘I am a feminist. I’ve been female for a long time now. I’d be stupid not to be on my own side.’ – Maya Angelou

I must remember that some people pronounce ‘market’ just like ‘Margit’. It is never advisable to let the mind wander when you should be concentrating instead but luckily not every ‘market’ is a call to order in my case.

Einstein already said back in his days: ‘The definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over again and expeciting different results.’

‘You’ve gotta be original, because if you’re like someone else, what do they need you for?’ – Bernadette Peters

So for the time being Kraft Heinz will not merge with Unilever. Is it fair to assume that this frees some ressources to come up with a policy on how to ensure Marmite supply to the continent post Brexit?

In this day and age of ubiquitous and often alleged fake news, Albert Einstein’s famous quote ‘Imagination is more important than knowledge’ becomes a frightening hypothesis.

16 February 2017

Is it a sign of my own age or the age we live in that there is not one single day anymore where I do not hear something that makes me feel as if my toe nails were to roll up?

Holidaying in Opatija is very relaxing. It radically reduces the need to take decisions. From wherever you are based, you either go to the left or to the right, so one way or the other on the Emperor Franz Joesph walkway that stretches along the beautiful coastline for 12 kilometers. And by the way, the former Emperor Franz Joseph is called tzar (spelled ‘car’) in the local language.
As you walk there is ample time to consider when it has become fashionable to wear running gear and other sportswear in public and even as one’s Sunday best. People sport their jogging outfit even in the best coffee shop in town! The other question that comes to mind is why so many people want to own ugly attack dogs. On the latter – and I know how subjective this is – I can only quote one of the most prominent politicians of our day: ‘So sad!’
Other than that stray cats seem to get along quite well with both: the inhabitants in their sports clothes and their dogs.

Is it ok to go on holidays and bring your most favorite potted plant? And is it eccentric to admit that the plant has a name? Well anyway, basil Berta is enjoying her time at the Croatian Riviera!

Even I am sometimes lost for words, for the last time when I was confronted with the following statement: ‘I do not want you to re-invent the wheel but I really want you to note down everything you know about the wheel.’ After having thouht about quite a bit it I think one can safely say that most models tend to be round, at least the more sucessful ones.

‘You can’t go around hoping that most people have sterling moral characters. The most you can hope for is that people will pretend that they do.’ – Fran Lebowitz

I knew it! Chicken intelligence has been grossly underestimated! I just want to mention that so far I have always gotten pitying looks when I sayed that I am almost as afraid of chickens than I am of dogs. I can only hope that in time this newest research will change people’s attitude!

  1. Love the blog as ever Margit. My favourite Einstein quote from 1929 and prescient for today’s fact-free politics is: ‘If A is success in life, then A = x + y + z. Work is x, play is y and z is keeping your mouth shut.’ Love Charlotte x
